Roos Vs. Fitchburg

March 10, 2015

1:00pm

Before boarding the bus, the sky was clear, and the temperature ran about 81 degrees. The conditions were near perfect, and the Good Weather Streak in Florida continued throughout the day.

3:30 pm

With Canton as the designated visiting team, Christian Nazario-Cruz stepped to the plate and worked a walk to lead off the first inning. He stole second base on the following pitch, and Wilson Matos followed up with a single.  The first inning showed that the Roos were seeing the ball well coming from the Falcons' Tom Gammell.

The game marked Canton junior, and fellow Sports Management colleague, Khalil Bratton's first appearance, and start, of the season. He struck out the 3-batter, and the final batter of the inning as well.
Seth Douglas took a pitch to his side to help the Kangaroos start the inning quickly with a runner on 1st and no outs. One batter later, Jesse Barton sent a sharp single to center to place runners on first and second. After both runners advanced on a wild pitch, Derrick Machado walked to pump the bases loaded.  Cruz was hit by a pitch to bring in a run, tie the game at 1, and kept the bases loaded.

Wilson kept it rolling when he ripped a single to left to keep his bat hot and plate a go-ahead run.  To begin the bottom of the second, Machado held his ground on a hard-hit line drive to 3rd and snagged the ball for the first out. The Roos' defensive play proved solid as the inning continued following Machado's snag.  Two more defensive gems came from Barton and Jeremy Baez.

Barton caught a looping line drive that was fading away from him, and Baez tracked down a fly in right, and the Falcons went down 1-2-3.
Chris Roenbeck dropped in a single to start the inning, and Brandon Welch was hit by a pitch to put the runners at first and second again for Canton.
But Fitchburg made a few nice plays on some tough high flies to retire the aggressive Roos. Matos took a pitch to the back, and despite Fitchburg's efforts to keep him close to first, he stole second base nonetheless, which placed a runner in scoring position.  Baez capitalized on his at-bat following the steal when he singled to right-center field to plate Wilson. Roenbeck tagged a pitch to left-center field, which placed the runners on first and third.  But Seth was robbed of a hit and RBI when the Falcons' third baseman, Clayton Beaulieu laid out and snagged a torched chopper down the line, and made the play at first.
Welch tossed a runner out, and Barton made a play hustling to lay out at shortstop and then
threw the runner out, which ended the inning.

Welch then started the 5th inning with a single to center, which was followed by Barton, who worked his at-bat for a walk.  Machado moved the runners over to second and third, which set up Chris Jones to bring home a run.
Welch threw yet another runner out and quelled the Falcons' attempt at adding to their total.  Dom Deliberti came in to relieve Khalil in the 6th after Khalil was struck by a liner back to the mound.
Dom got the next batter to hit into an inning ending double play.

Seth worked a walk to start the 7th, and Welch came up big with a looping line drive single to right.  Barton nailed a shot down the third base line, yet threebagger Beaulieu made another nice diving play.  Machado worked hard at the plate, fighting off several pitches, then filling the count up, and eventually drawing an impressive walk.  This play was crucial in providing the Roos a spark to a huge comeback.  The rally forced Fitchburg to make another pitching change.  Jones dropped in a single to bring in another run.  Cruz and Matos walked back to back.
In the bottom of the 7th, Baez hosed down a runner who was trying to score from second on a single.  With a perfect throw on target, Welch caught the toss from Baez, and easily applied the tag at the plate.  After Douglas walked, Welch continued to impress as he moved Seth into scoring position when he laced another single up the middle.  This put another runner on board for the Roos. Barton moved the two runners each up a base.  Chayan Flores stepped up at the plate and took an HBP to fill the bases.  Matt Hall came in to run for Flores, and Cruz got hit by a pitch which forced a run in.  Nick Demarais made great contact in his chances at the plate, sending shots to deep left, and shortstop.

Keenan Shannon came in for Canton to provide relief for Dom on the mound.  As the Roos trailed by just one at 11-10, Keenan shut the door on the Fitchburg Falcons' attempts to expand their lead when he struck out the third batter.  Seth singled in the top of the 9th, to keep the Kangaroos alive with one out.  Unfortunately, that would be the last production the Roos could squeeze out.  Despite the loss, this game showed the grit that this team has, and that they are determined to never give up.

This is the official Game Recap from Nate Hart at the SUNY Canton Athletic Department:

5:50 pm

Immediately following the game we stopped at SMOKIN' Jim's again for our post game meal.  And again, we were not disappointed.
The meal was delicious, and I was honored post-meal with the opportunity to converse with Luis Clemente (#21), and his family. Bobby Clemente (#21).

Today is the Roos Day Off, but there will not be a cease in the action-->-->-->Stay TUNED For a RoosRecap tomorrow as we hit the beach and take in a professional baseball game.
