SUNY Canton Roos Roll in 2 Well-Played Games vs. SUNY Oneonta

1:00 pm

WINTER HAVEN, Florida--

We got the stat program up and running JUST in time to track the SUNY Canton Kangaroos taking on the Oneonta Red Dragons.

 A FAMILY of outfielders

Jeremy Baez started the Roo offense in the first with a single.  Zach Lawrence anchored the pitching when he took the hill and threw for the first game of the double header.  Lawrence struck out the first batter looking on a fastball that caught the outside half of the plate, and he continued to make great pitches all afternoon long.  He struck out the last batter of the first as well on a beautiful breaking ball.
Brandon Welch tossed a runner out at second with a laser throw to catch him stealing.

Christian Nazario-Cruz made an unbelievable catch in centerfield.  Matt Mastroianni of the Red Dragons sent a shot into deep center, where Cruz tracked it down and, laying out towards the wall, over his shoulder, made the play to end the inning.
After Chris Jones was hit by a pitch, and with the hit-and-run on in the top of the 4th, Baez kept his hot streak rolling when he sent a single to center.  He then stole second, to put the runners on 2nd and 3rd.  Chris Roenbeck advanced both runners and earned an RBI with a groundout to second to tie the game up.  Seth Douglas broke the tie quickly with a single to center to plate Baez.  Wilson Matos kept the hot bats going when he followed up with a single to left.  Wilson also showed a solid defensive presence on several ground balls.  Keenan Shannon was hit by a pitch in the top of the 5th to start the inning.  He then stole second.
Lawrence continued his dominance on the mound and had a great battle with the Red Drangons' right handed batter Mike Cruz.  After a series of several foul balls, Zach absolutely blew a fastball by him to end the inning.
Final Oneonta 4, Roos 2

Game 2
3:00 p,m.

The Roos did not start the game as crisp as they had hoped, but their determination and focus change turned the whole game around. With Derek Harkin pitching well for Canton, the Roos only saw themselves down 4-0 and chipped away with determination.
This determination and momentum shift was evident after a quick pep talk between innings, and from there, the Roos never looked back.  In the bottom of the third, they started to come back to life behind the bats of Douglas, Baez, and a huge pinch-hit at-bat from Derrick Machado.
Matos drove a single, Baez followed up with another hit.  Douglas destroyed a pitch into the leftfield wall to plate a pair of runs.  Derrick's hit brought the Roos within a run.
The Roos Were FIRED UP!
Dom Deliberti came in to pitch and held the Roos within striking distance... and did they ever strike:
Chris Roenbeck rocked a deep single and the bats continued to rock the Red Dragons' pitching.
Vinny Bondinello, Juan RosaAxel Riviere and Chayan Flores were hit by pitches,
>>>>Cruz finished the night going 2-3 with a walk, and 3 runs scored
>>>>Matos went 4-5, and scored 3 times as well.
>>>> Baez finished 2-4, and scored a run, and Travis Schindler took a pinch-hit at-bat and took three bags on a shot to the left field wall, and then scored as well.
>>>> Roenbeck ended the game after going 1-4, and scoring.
>>>> Seth Douglas' 3-4 night included 2 runs and several RBI's
>>>>Welch's 3-5 performance included an RBI, and a run, too
>>>>Rosa Scored a run
>>>>Machado finished up going 3-3, with a walk, several RBI's, and a run scored.
>>>>Jesse Barton came in to pinch-hit and went 1-2 with 2 RBI's, a run scored, and was hit by a pitch.
